The City of Alamo (Alamo) is a municipal government which is a Home Ruled City. This gives the city full power of local self - government, with a Mayor & four commissioners, including the right to amend their adopted City Charter, as provided by the Constitution & laws of the State. Alamo was incorporated in 1924, and it was named for the Alamo Land and Sugar Company. It is located within 7 miles of the Texas-Mexico border (boundaries being right by the river) and is also one of the Rio Grande Valley’s gateways to Mexico. Alamo is part of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metropolitan area and is also called the “Refuge to the Valley” since traveling through Alamo will take you straight to the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. It is a favorite of birdwatchers from all regions of the world and is nicknamed the “Land of Two Summers”, as Winter Texans and other visitor’s total approximately 34,000 per year. The mission statement for the city was adopted on March 1, 2011 and is: Known as the “Refuge to the Valley”, the City of Alamo is a haven dedicated to providing sustainable, reputable, superior services for all.

Gloucester Township is a 24 square mile suburban community in Camden County, New Jersey. Just eight miles east of Philadelphia and 50 miles west of Atlantic City, Gloucester Township is made up of a cluster of neighborhoods that make it one of the fastest growing municipalities in Southern New Jersey. Gloucester Township strives to help our community live as environmentally friendly as possible, and also as purely and healthfully as possible and aims to improve the conditions of our only home, Earth, not just for ourselves but for future generations to come. Towards this end, the township in collaboration with the Blackwood/Gloucester Township Kiwanis has established a Monarch Butterfly Garden to encourage the growth of the Monarch population as well as the education of community residents.

Carolina Beach is a coastal community in eastern North Carolina. We are home to many monarch butterflies. Mayor LeAnn Pierce of Carolina Beach pledges to encourage the use of native plants, shrubs, trees and milkweed at town properties and around the island. I am excited that a butterfly garden will be installed at Carolina Beach Elementary School March 27. Our town is committed to the health and survival of the monarch butterfly.

Mayor Orozco is working with a loose knit group of environmentalists and naturalists to help support Monarch Butterfly populations. The group has undertaken projects for a number fo years but has no previously taken “The Mayors’ Monarch Pledge.” The group sees this as a multi-year effort. For the first year, the group plans to 1) Issue a Proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. 2) Launch a public communication effort to encourage residents to plant monarch gardens at their homes or in their neighborhoods. 3) Engage with community garden groups and urge them to plant native milkweeds and nectar-producing plants. 4) Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs, and 5) Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent community location. The group is investigating locations to work on the demonstration garden and will coordinate their efforts with the City’s Parks Team. As part of the Earth Day 2021 effort the City’s Community Services team will explore additional opportunities to communicate the importance of protecting all species by creating spaces and executing plans that allow species to live and thrive in urban areas.
