The City of Champaign is a community in east-central Illinois, with approximately 89,000 residents. Along with our neighboring city, Urbana, it is home to the University of Illinois. Mayor Feinen is committed to preserving and expanding habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators and is a proud supporter of the Mayors' Monarch Pledge. Through the leadership of Mayor Feinen and the Champaign City Council, staff has direction to maintain, establish, and expand pollinator habitat on public land. The City also coordinates efforts with the Champaign Park District to support their programs for public outreach to encourage residents in the community to use and establish native plantings to support monarchs and other pollinators.

Grayslake is a Village located in Northeast Illinois with a population of roughly 21,000. The Village has worked extensively to maintain and create green space in conjunction with development, and places emphasis on planting native plants and other pollinator promoting plants when undertaking landscaping and other projects. Mayor Taylor is committed to protecting the Monarch butterfly population and looks forward to continuing to work to promote local pollinators through the Village’s efforts as well as engaging the community about ways they can help the Monarchs at home.

Pacific Grove is a community of 15,000 located on the Pacific coast in Monterey County, California. We are an overwintering site for Monarch butterflies and have enormous community support for the iconic butterfly, which is incorporated into our city logo, and is part of the identity of the city. Each year we hold a Butterfly Parade to welcome the butterflies to the Monarch Sanctuary; all the school children participate in the parade, making this event a community-wide celebration. We are sustaining our Monarch Sanctuary and will be continuing and initiating new efforts to encourage residents to plant nectar gardens and maintain safe landscapes for the Monarchs.

Yukon, OK is the 16th largest city in Oklahoma with a population of 29,078.The town grew by 28% since the census of 2010. Spanning over 27 miles, the population density is 1096 people per square mile. Average household income is $87,729and median age is approximately 37 years of age. At the end of 2020, Yukon had approximately 10 Monarch Waystations, according to Monarch Watch website. Yukon has an active Parks and Recreation department that is active and interested in developing and implementing Monarch habitats.

The City of Waukesha is a community of approximately 70,000 residents. Some of the residents are committed to protecting the Monarch Butterfly. The Mayor has supported their efforts and that of staff by endorsing the pledge for several years. The City has a Community Butterfly Garden, milkweed plantings and low mow areas to assist the Monarch. Educational sessions are also offered as part of the Arbor Day Celebration.
