The seed corn company Pioneer Hi-Bred International (currently known as Corteva Agriscience) was founded in Johnston and the community served as it corporate headquarters. Johnston is also home to the international headquarters of John Deere Financial. Other organizations with a significant presence in Johnston include Camp Dodge (5,000 acres), an Iowa National Guard and US military training center, and Saylorville Lake (5,950 acres), an U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood risk management and recreation reservoir. The City of Prospect Heights is a Chicago suburb of approximately 15,900 population. Over the years, the City has provided financial resources, along with other private donors, to the Prospect Heights Natural Resources Commission to support their efforts in re-naturalizing the open areas of the City. Developing a pollinator park on City property through a generous grant from Commonwealth Edison and was one of the key aspects to the revitalization efforts. The planning of the park and volunteer labor resources were provided by the City's Natural Resources Commission and the natural wildflower plantings in the pollinator park offer a tailored habitat for monarch butterflies and other needed pollinators. The City and Natural Resources Commission is now building upon the success of the original pollinator park by further extending the park around the perimeter of Hillcrest Lake to promote the habitat of pollinators and to help stablize the shoreline of Hillcrest Lake.

The Village has committed to addressing these environmental concerns through the implementation of a diverse planting program, and the establishment of additional pollinator gardens. Mayor Jesal Patel has committed to saving the Monarch Butterfly and other pollinators with his signing of the Mayor's Monarch Pledge.

As a coastal community we face uncertainty related to sustainability, sea level rise, climate change and the impending crisis related to solid waste management. Awareness of how small changes in thinking and behavior can make for big impacts. 1st Selectman, Matt Hoey, has committed to efforts to save the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayor's Monarch Pledge and related activities to achieve those ends.
