The City of Gahanna is a suburb on the east side of Columbus, Ohio, and it is home to a population of 33,248. People come to Gahanna to live because of the city’s proximity to John Glenn International Airport, the 750 acres of parkland, over 17 miles of trails, and a sense of community that brings people together. Gahanna’s parks alone contain many special features such as community gardens, a State Nature Preserve, and a certified arboretum. Mayor Jadwin and other community leaders have supported efforts to save the monarch butterfly and other pollinators by signing the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge. The City of Gahanna has placed importance on helping Ohio’s pollinating insects by planting new prairies, educating residents about the natural world, planting pollinator-friendly landscape beds, and partnering with the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District Community Backyards Program and Green Columbus. The City of Gahanna is currently developing a Sustainability Plan that will help support sustainable initiatives such as land conservation and improved stewardship of Gahanna’s wildlife habitats.

The Village of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, located just 35 miles north of the City of Chicago with approximately 9,062 residents, is an upscale, friendly “rural by design” community. As a certified Bee City USA and Tree City USA affiliate, an Audubon International Sustainable Community, and an International Dark Sky Community, the Village is fiercely committed to protecting our natural resources, boasting twenty-four park sites and two pollinator habitats – Brierwoods Preserve and Meadowlark Park and Arboretum. Mayor Dominick DiMaggio of the Village of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, has committed to saving the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and looks forward to expanding pollinator environments throughout the community.

Asheville is a city nestled in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Known for our biological diversity and lush ecosystems, Asheville was the birthplace of Bee City USA, now a national pollinator conservation association. In a resolution adopted on June 26, 2021, Asheville adopted a set of commitments to restoring habitat that provides food, nesting sites, and overwinter sites for pollinators. The City of Asheville is proud of our efforts to reverse pollinator decline by dedicating public space to support thriving pollinator communities and engaging residents in building more habitat throughout the city.

Lanark County Warden John Fenik committed to preserving habitat for the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators in 2022 by signing the Mayors' Monarch Pledge. Lanark County has taken the Mayors' Monarch Pledge since 2019 and continues to promote and restore pollinator habitat on rights-of-ways, county land, and within the community.

Malibu is a unique land and marine environment and residential community whose citizens have historically evidenced a commitment to sacrifice urban and suburban conveniences to protect that environment and lifestyle and to preserve unaltered natural resources and rural characteristics. Since its incorporation in 1991, the City of Malibu has worked tirelessly, to uphold this founding vision. The City has built three stormwater treatment facilities to improve local water quality. Multiple pollinator gardens have been planted and only native plants are installed on City-owned properties. The City's policies continue to promote green building, native landscaping, and recycled water reuse to preserve Malibu's unique natural environment. The City of Malibu has adopted a progressive Earth Friendly Management Program as well as a Dark Sky Ordinance which sets the City above others in its dedication to Monarchs and the local natural ecosystem as a whole.

Cheltenham Township, established in 1682 as part of Philadelphia County, PA, is proud of its 300+-year history. With its prominent Abolitionist leadership, including housing Camp William Penn for Colored Soldiers during the Civil War, its integrated residential setting, two Historic Districts and 8 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, many of Cheltenham’s current population of approximately 38,000 host bumper stickers proudly claiming, “I Choose Cheltenham”. Also noted with that slogan, in addition to Historic and Diverse, are the descriptors: Creative, Progressive, and Green. Cheltenham Township is a First Class Township with a Home Rule Charter in Montgomery County, PA. The Township is home to five colleges/universities, a technical school, a thriving art center and an adult school organization. Volunteers serve through Friends groups to support a number of parks, community gardens, sports teams, and libraries. Hundreds of others serve on municipal and school committees and as firefighters. With 25 parks or public green spaces over our total 9 square miles, Cheltenham residents are happy to flock outdoors. The Township’s active Environmental Advisory Council continues to advocate for sustainable yards and practices, and Cheltenham was an early adopter of a Sustainability Plan, which was incorporated into our Comprehensive Plan document. Goals named in the Sustainability Plan include community engagement, ecological stewardship, sustainable development, and healthy living for all. As such, the Monarch Pledge fits well with the efforts already underway in Cheltenham to protect native habitats, reduce/reverse climate change, and engage the community toward a sustainable future. It is in this spirit that we sign onto the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge.
