Recently Mayor Zac Burden proclaimed March 21, 2022 as Mayors' Monarch Pledge Day to demonstrate the City's commitment to creating habitat for the monarch and educating citizens about how they can make a difference. Residents are encouraged to plant native milkweed and nectar plants in locations where they live, work, learn, play and worship. The City will also investigate and identify locations in city-owned land and right of way where native milkweed could be introduced.

The Mayor's Monarch Pledge is a perfect opportunity to expand that commitment to include native pollinators and the native plants they need to thrive.

Mayor Taylor is committed to protecting the Monarch butterfly population and looks forward to continuing to work to promote local pollinators through the Village’s efforts as well as engaging the community about ways they can help the Monarchs at home.

Melita is a town located in the southwestern corner of the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is surrounded by the Municipality of Two Borders and occupies a bend of the Souris River. Located along PTH 3 and 83. With a population of ~1,000 residents we are a community working together to help create new habitat for Monarchs and to help them in any way we can. Being a part of the Mayoral Monarch Pledge program is very important to us and we look forward to continue to be a part of it for the years to come!

The Village of Hoffman Estates is located in Cook County, Illinois and is a northwest suburb of the City of Chicago. Hoffman Estates is a diverse community of nearly 55,000 located along and on both sides (north and south) of Interstate 90. The Village contains over 4000 acres of forest preserves under the auspices of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Additional parks and outdoor facilities are enjoyed by our residents and visitors through partnership with the Hoffman Estates Park District. Mayor Bill McLeod and our Village Board of Trustees are incredibly supportive of sustainability efforts throughout the Village, including the preservation of the Monarch Butterfly. The Mayor supports activities put forth by the Village’s Sustainability Commission related to the preservation of the Monarch.

The City of Laguna Beach took the Monarch Pledge to support endangered Western Monarch Butterflies in our community of Laguna Beach in Orange County, California. The City of Laguna Beach is a small coastal city in Orange County, California that is home to just under 25,000 residents. It’s known for its many art galleries, coves, tide pools, and beaches. Trails meander through coastal canyons in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Monarchs need all of us to make our homes, businesses, schools, and community spaces more Monarch-friendly and wildlife-friendly. Working together, the City has committed to creating a Monarch habitat and we can make our community a safe harbor for Monarch Butterflies. Together, we will ensure that future generations have the chance to enjoy this iconic butterfly.
