Millville is a town located in Delaware located on the east coast with a population of roughly 1,300. The town is located 3 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and is home to the newly constructed Evans Park/Playground. Mayor Belinko has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with their signing of the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitats throughout the communities.

Hendersonville is a city in western North Carolina with a population of roughly 16,000. The city is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is home to the beautiful Oklawaha Greenway, a 3.5-mile trail winding through wetlands, meadows, and forests connecting four public parks. The heart of Hendersonville’s downtown area sports a two-story pollinator mural complete with illustrations of the Monarch Butterfly’s life cycle above a demonstration pollinator garden. A few blocks away, artists transformed a city sidewalk into a honey-combed yellow brick road through which pedestrians can meander through an illustrative border garden of native plants and pollinators. The City of Hendersonville has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and will continue to engage residents in building more pollinator habitat throughout the city.

Our Community and Economic Development Committee is committed to beautification projects throughout town, including our new micropark in the downtown that encourages visitors to engage with the garden and trees. The Monarch Pledge fits well with our committee's mission to improve and beautify the town, with many of the strategies overlapping with efforts already underway.

Oviedo is a city just north of Orlando, Florida with a population of 42,000. The City owns over 2,000 acres of park land and Mayor Megan Sladek has proposed eliminating the use of harmful pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in the majority of Oviedo’s parks. Mayor Sladek is looking forward to helping monarchs and all other pollinators thrive by encouraging cultivation of a diverse array of native plants, including milkweed.
