Among other related commitments, Hillsboro is a US Conference of Mayors' climate champion, Tree City USA, Bee City USA and partner in the Backyard Habitat Certification Program. The Hillsboro community has demonstrated its commitment to the conservation of nature and wildlife, including the Monarch butterfly. Nestled in the Tualatin Valley of western Oregon, Hillsboro is Oregon's 5th largest city with 108,000 community members. Known for its diverse community, strong local economy, and beautiful natural areas, for decades Hillsboro's leaders have placed an emphasis on environmental stewardship. Strong goals and actions guide stewardship efforts for both the city organization, which provides a full suite of municipal services, and for the greater community. Hillsboro prides itself as having one of the largest preserved natural areas within the community, the several-hundred acre Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, along with myriad other natural areas, parks and environmental assets.

The City of Alamo (Alamo) was incorporated in 1924 and is a municipal government which is a Home Ruled city. This gives the city full power of local self- government, including the right to amend their adopted City Charter, as provided by the Constitution & laws of the State. Alamo was named for the Alamo Land and Sugar Company that is located within 7 miles of the Texas-Mexico border and serves as one of the Rio Grande Valley’s gateways to Mexico. Alamo has been nicknamed the “Land of Two Summers”, as Winter Texans and other visitor’s total 34,000 per year. Every winter, an estimated 20,000 Winter Texans live up to eight months in the City of Alamo. The City of Alamo is also called the “Refuge to the Valley” since traveling through Alamo will take you straight to the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. It is a favorite of birdwatchers from all regions of the world. The city has been a grant recipient with the World Butterfly Center located in Mission, Texas for the establishment of butterfly gardens throughout the city. Through this grant award we able to plant 7 gardens (library, day care center, housing authority, 1 city parks, youth center, 2 elementary schools) and get staff trained on the appropriate maintenance of these gardens. The city is continuously working with Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge on the expansion and appropriate upkeep of these gardens. The city is in the process of creating 4 more butterfly gardens at city parks and expanding 3 current ones.

Austin was the first city in Texas to adopt the Mayor’s Monarch pledge and has a long-standing history as a Community Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation. Located in the heart of Texas, Austin sits along the central fly way of the monarch butterfly migration route and is dedicated to preserving and maintaining milkweed and nectar sources for the monarch's migration.

The City of Palm Desert is a California city nestled in the heart of the Coachella Valley. With a diverse demographic, 362 days of sunshine and a population of approximately 53,000, Palm Desert is home to many beautiful parks, community gardens and other outdoor activities. Palm Desert is also home to The Living Desert Zoo & Botanical Gardens, which puts conservation into action by promoting environmental sustainability, including species preservation of many desert plants and animals, including butterflies. Mayor Jan Harnik of Palm Desert, California has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators by signing the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and looks forward to continuing the City of Palm Desert’s partnership with the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens to engage residents in building more pollinator habitats throughout the City.

The Village of Northbrook is north of Chicago and a few miles west of Lake Michigan. Northbrook's Village government and residents are firmly committed to conservation efforts to improve the health of our entire community through native ecosystem revitalization projects. Village President Sandy Frum first took the Mayors' Monarch Pledge in 2017 and has expanded programming for pollinator conservation since then, through programs such as Village reimbursements for native garden expenses. We look forward to further demonstrating Northbrook's dedication to this issue in 2021 and for years to come.

South Beloit is a city located in Winnebago County, Illinois. It sits along the IL and WI border. Our population is nearly 8000. Nature at The Confluence was built in 2017 on a former dumping area along Turtle Creek and the Rock River. A new 6 acre prairie and an educational pollinator garden surround the 2200 square foot indoor Nature Learning Center. Nature At The Confluence offers a live monarch exhibit, monarch educational programs and gives away milkweed seeds. When the center opened there were 10 stems of Common Milkweed on the property, and a 2020 survey shows over 200 stems. We have also introduced 3 other milkweed varieties.

The Colony is a City in north Texas with a population of about 45,000. We are known as the City by the lake, because we are located on the SE shore of Lake Lewisville. Mayor McCourry has committed to preservation of the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayors' Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging resident in creating more and maintaining current pollinator habitat throughout the city.
