We are taking the pledge because of our commitment to protecting our natural habitat for current and future generations and because of our community's deep connection to the Monarch Butterfly.

The City of Alamo (Alamo) was incorporated in 1924 and is a municipal government which is a Home Ruled city. This gives the city full power of local self-government, including the right to amend their adopted City Charter, as provided by the Constitution & laws of the State. Alamo was named for the Alamo Land and Sugar Company that is located within 7 miles of the Texas-Mexico border and serves as one of the Rio Grande Valley’s gateways to Mexico. Alamo has been nicknamed the “Land of Two Summers”, as Winter Texans and other visitors total 34,000 per year. Every winter, an estimated 20,000 Winter Texans live up to eight months in the City of Alamo. The City of Alamo is also called the “Refuge to the Valley” since traveling through Alamo will take you straight to the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. It is a favorite of birdwatchers from all regions of the world. The city has been a grant recipient with the World Butterfly Center located in Mission, Texas for the establishment of butterfly gardens throughout the city. Through this grant award we able to plant 7 gardens (library, day care center, housing authority, 1 city parks, youth center, 2 elementary schools) and get staff trained on the appropriate maintenance of these gardens. The city is continuously working with Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge on the expansion and appropriate upkeep of these gardens. The city is in the process of creating 4 more butterfly gardens at city parks and expanding 3 current ones.

The City of Dallas in North Central Texas is located in the middle of the monarch butterfly migration path. Dallas is home to more than 400 park properties covering more than 23,000 acres, including 200 acres of Texas Blackland Prairie remnants. This means our city is well positioned to help save the monarch butterfly by planting gardens, restoring habitats, conducting educational outreach activities, and more. Dallas is eager to bolster its existing and begin new conservation efforts to protect monarchs and all pollinators.

Grand Forks, ND, is located on the Minnesota border, across from its sister city of East Grand Forks, MN. The city was named for its location at the fork of the Red and Red Lake Rivers. Grand Forks boasts a population of 59,166. Combined with its twin city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, it forms the center of the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, often called Greater Grand Forks. Over the past five years, several agencies have embraced the opportunity to provide wildflower and pollinator gardens throughout the community. The city of Grand Forks has built partnerships with Audubon Midwest, the University of ND, and GF Park District to establish restoration projects along the English Coulee.

Newport, KY--Today’s Newport is a hotbed of development and redevelopment. The east side has been transformed into the East Row Historic District, a place where homes have been returned to their original historic state. Community pride can be seen on every corner of our city as preservation and new investment continues. Tourist attractions such as the Newport Aquarium, World Peace Bell, Hofbrau House and Newport on the Levee bring many visitors each year. Newport is also becoming a home for unique shops, cafes, and independent businesses. Our riverfront community is now brimming with dining options and festivities. For all that it has become, the best is yet to come for Newport. The Mayors’ Monarch Pledge is a worthy endeavor which we are excited to participate. Our community is committing to creating habitat for the monarch butterfly and other pollinators, and to educate residents about how they can make a difference at home and in their community. Our city in conjunction with a strong volunteer community has taken bold steps to green our city through continuous tree planting over many years.

Washington is a small, rural community with about 900 residents. Many residents volunteer countless hours in the areas of litter control, landscaping, lawn maintenance, Main Street beautification, maintenance of a small public park, and general outdoor maintenance. The Town of Washington will work with the Washington Garden Club to plant milkweed and growing milkweed from seed and distribute during a spring sale. Plans are to establish small Monarch way station.

The City of Westmount is an independently governed city located on the island of Montreal in Quebec, Canada. Westmount is home to a population of approximately 20 000 residents, on roughly 4 square km. The City is a green urban oasis nestled on the Westmount Summit mountain peak and includes a large natural forest, 13 official parks, community gardens and numerous other green spaces for residents to enjoy. Westmount is proud to have a Monarch Butterfly demonstration garden in our largest and most prominent park. A Seed Lending library offers Milkeweed and other seed pollinator blends to residents free of charge. Westmount also has its own pollinator beehive which is funded by the sale of honey each fall. Mayor Smith signed the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge in 2021, and is excited to continue to engage our staff and community in building habitat and raising awareness around the Monarch [GJ1] Butterfly and other pollinators.
