The Village of Oak Park is doing its part to help save the monarch butterfly, an iconic North American species whose populations have declined dramatically in recent years. Village officials have joined hundreds of communities across the country in a pledge to create a healthy habitat that will aid monarch butterflies on their annual migration across the continent. In addition to issuing a proclamation to raise awareness of the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat, the Village plants native milkweed and nectar plants on public properties when appropriate across the community, including traffic diverters, cul-de-sacs, medians and planters. The Village's Public Works Center is also home to a certified Monarch butterfly waystation. According to the National Wildlife Federation, monarch butterflies numbered around 1 billion in 1996. Today, their numbers have declined significantly as a result of numerous threats, particularly the loss of habitat due to cropland conversion, urban development, and agricultural practices.

Grand Rapids is a city in west Michigan with a population of nearly 200,000. Grand Rapids resides along the Grand River and is just under 30 miles from the shores of Lake Michigan. Mayor LaGrand is committed to working to protect monarch butterflies and other native pollinators by signing the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and supporting the ongoing pollinator conservation efforts by groups in the Grand Rapids community. Mayor LaGrand recognizes the important role played by the Upper Midwest in providing crucial summer habitat for monarch butterflies in their annual journey, and through this pledge seeks to highlight the role we can play in protecting this iconic species.

Northville is a leading community in sustainability in both Wayne and Oakland Counties, where the municipality is the only one that sits in both. The city of Northville has established a sustainability committee that has been in operation since 2019 and has led the charge on many aspects, under their jurisdiction in Wayne County, working with county officials... examples of activities of our sustainability team include being a Tree City USA (5 years running)... reduction in invasive species in our 750 acres of park land, and river access... control of pesticides that are harmful to the environment, along with working along with our Department of Public Works (DPW) to use less salts and less environmentally unfriendly chemicals. Mayor Turnbull is looking forward to committing to signing the Mayor's Monarch Pledge engaging Northville in sustainable activities for pollinators, trees, and other environmental aspects.
