In 2014, St. Louis began its Milkweeds for Monarchs initiative and has established well over 400 green spaces with milkweed and nectar sources to support the Monarch and other pollinators. Mayor Cara Spencer continues the City’s important efforts to support pollinators and connect residents with nature. Monarch and pollinator gardens will continue to be established and maintained along greenways, in city parks, neighborhoods, schools and at homes across St. Louis.

The city of East Chicago is committed to providing habitat and spreading awareness for the Monarch butterfly. East Chicago has a large population of residents from Mexican descent for which the Monarch butterfly has deep cultural significance. East Chicago has two native pollinator gardens to support breeding Monarch populations, Cypra Garden in Washington Park and The Monarch Butterfly Garden in Kosciuszko Park. The city also has an annual Festival de la Monarca in the fall where it celebrates the Monarch butterfly's migration through East Chicago and its cultural connections to Mexico through music, food and dance.

Pismo Beach is a popular destination for visitors who come for the wide sandy beaches, beautiful downtown and great amenities for visitors. Each fall, the Monarch Butterflies migrate thousands of miles to California’s Central Coast, and Pismo Beach has long been one of their favorite wintering destinations. The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is one of only a few sites in the state that have historically hosted tens of thousands of butterflies, clustering in the limbs of tall Eucalyptus trees beside the coastal estuary. There is ample milkweed for the butterflies at the grove. A local non-profit, the Friends of Price House, has planted milkweed in a city park.
