The city of Mesquite is a suburb of Dallas, Texas, and is just fifteen minutes east of downtown Dallas. The population is 143,000 and to keep the population engaged, we have a very extensive parks and recreation system dedicated to the education, preservation, and expansion of pollinator and native habitats. One such endeavor, the Paschall Park Butterfly Trail, is maintained and monitored by Keep Mesquite Beautiful and its dedicated volunteers. Annually, volunteers improve the habitat, apply for monarch butterfly host plant grants, and assist in tagging the butterfly population. Mesquite aims to be a dynamic and engaging community while ensuring native beauty is embraced at its core.

Charlotte is the most populous city in North Carolina, with a population of roughly 860,000. The city is nestled in the piedmont region and is home to many parks, greenways, and community gardens. Mayor Lyles has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with her signing of the Mayors' Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitats throughout the city.

Whitestone is a municipality in West Parry Sound District, within the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve. Our population is small, but our geographic area is large and extensively forested, with many lakes and rivers. The character of our community is a mixture of rural and cottage country, with a strong culture of environmental conservation. Monarch butterflies frequent our area during the summer months, where they can find an abundance of suitable habitat. We have frequently observed butterflies and moths through their metamorphoses. Several years ago, our Municipality directed staff to avoid cutting milkweed during roadside grass cutting operations. Our Municipal Council has just taken the Mayor's Monarch Pledge.

The City has planted a small pollinator area and wish to expand this to an acre area in the near future for educational, beautification & conservation efforts.

The Commission will be preparing a packet to handout to the community at local events. We are purchasing butterfly friendly bushes to plant at our local community garden. We also plan on holding a local pollination day to discuss the Monarch Butterfly and its important to the Environment.

The City of Palm Springs pledges to helping monarch butterflies and other pollinators through city initiatives. Since monarch caterpillars will only feed on milkweed, the City of Palm Springs Parks Maintenance Department has planted milkweed plants at City parks, City Hall and in medians throughout the City.

Scotch Plains is a town in New Jersey with approximately 25,000 residents. We are located a few miles from the Watchung Reservation which covers over 2,000 acres and is home to native plants, wildlife and includes an environmental education center that many Scotch Plains residents take advantage of. The Scotch Plains Park System is home to over 10 parks. Scotch Plains has a community garden which has a pollinator garden installed around the perimeter. The Scotch Plains Garden Club is active in town and holds plant exchanges annually. Mayor Losardo of the Township of Scotch plains has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with their signing of the Mayor's Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitat throughout the city.
