Summary for 2023

Minnetonka is a fully developed suburban community of more than 53,000 residents located eight miles west of Minneapolis. The city’s natural surroundings — including woodlands, prairies, wetlands and other bodies of water — set it apart from similar-sized Twin Cities suburbs and give the community a distinct character. Minnetonka has a long history of habitat protection and restoration, and in 2017 joined the Mayors' Monarch Pledge to focus actions that benefit monarchs, pollinators and other wildlife on public and private property. Minnetonka is a 2022 Monarch Champion city, completing 26 of 29 action steps. Chamblee is a vibrant urban city located just 14 miles from downtown Atlanta with a population of roughly 30,000 residents. The city is located within the piedmont region of the state and is home to 10 parks and the Chamblee Rail Trail. Mayor Mock has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with his signing of the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitat throughout the city.

The City of Charlotte provides services to more than 860,000 residents. The city’s focus areas are Community Safety, Housing and Neighborhood Development, Economic Development, Environment and Transportation & Planning. Charlotte is guided by the following mission: "Charlotte will lead as a global city by continuously improving, protecting, and preserving the environment, its community, and economy, while ensuring equity and resilience - for today’s and future generations." In addition, the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan, adopted in 2021, states: "Charlotte will protect and enhance its surface water quality, tree canopy, and natural areas with a variety of trees, plantings, green infrastructure, green building practices, and open space at different scales throughout the entire community as a component of sustainable city infrastructure that addresses the threat of climate change." Lastly, in 2018, Charlotte City Council unanimously adopted the Strategic Energy Action Plan, and since then Charlotte has been taking bold action to strive towards a low-carbon, sustainable, resilient and equitable future.

The City of Pflugerville (COP), where quality meets life, is a vastly expanding city north of Austin, with an estimated population of 73,000. The city has grown from 549 residents in 1970. Pflugerville’s uniqueness expands beyond its name and the “Pf”, Pflugerville has more than 500 acres of parks and 529 areas of open space and more than 40 miles of trails in the city’s only 25.56 square miles. Pflugerville is known for its pfamily-pfriendly atmosphere, for keeping a small-town feel in the midst of growth, and for its rich German culture; and others are noticing. The City of Pflugerville is ranked #70 on Livability's 2020 "Top 100 Best Small to Mid- Size Cities" list. Pflugerville reached 15 consecutive years of recognition as a Tree City USA from the Arbor Day Foundation and National Association of State Foresters for its efforts and commitments to urban forestry. Pflugerville has been named a Gold Star Affiliate by Keep Texas Beautiful for the fourth year in a row. Additionally, Pflugerville has received Platinum Level Scenic City Certification by Scenic Texas based on an evaluation of the city's parks, trails and open spaces, enhanced streetscapes, sign control, unique municipal features, special programs and other programs that affect overall visual appeal of the community. And finally, Pflugerville was also ranked in the 92th percentile out of over 1,200 U.S. cities on WalletHub's "2022's Best Small Cities in America" list.

The Village of Ardsley is located in Westchester County, New York and has a population of over 5,000 residents. The Village is committed to and already taken many actions to help the monarch butterfly including increasing public awareness of the issue and encouraging residents to build gardens for monarchs. The Village has launched the Ardsley Pollinator Pathway Project to help save endangered pollinators. The Village is aware of the importance of saving monarchs and other pollinators, and believes that encouraging the expansion of native plantings will not only benefit monarchs but all native species, as well as providing natural and beautiful spaces for Village residents.

Among other related commitments, Hillsboro is a US Conference of Mayors' climate champion, Tree City USA, Bee City USA and partner in the Backyard Habitat Certification Program. The Hillsboro community has demonstrated its commitment to the conservation of nature and wildlife, including the Monarch butterfly. Nestled in the Tualatin Valley of western Oregon, Hillsboro is Oregon's 5th largest city with 108,000 community members. Known for its diverse community, strong local economy, and beautiful natural areas, for decades Hillsboro's leaders have placed an emphasis on environmental stewardship. Strong goals and actions guide stewardship efforts for both the city organization, which provides a full suite of municipal services, and for the greater community. Hillsboro prides itself as having one of the largest preserved natural areas within the community, the several-hundred acre Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, along with myriad other natural areas, parks and environmental assets.

Established in 1984, the City of Rochester Hills, in Southeast Michigan, has a population of roughly 75,000. Rochester Hills is committed to sustaining its position among the nation’s preeminent places to live, work and raise a family. The community continues to value its natural resources and green spaces. The City sees the importance of not only protecting and enhancing these resources; but acting as a leader and model to residents and the community. As part of this effort, the city is committed to taking actions to conserve and maintain pollinator habitats. Actions include supporting local native plants sales, seed collection programs, providing pollinator habitat support to HOA's and residents, and continued stewardship efforts in our City Parks and Green Spaces.

Morrisville is located adjacent to North Carolina's Research Triangle Park - a national hub for technology, hosting over 300 companies and employing roughly 50,000 people. The Town of Morrisville continues to work toward it's 11 goals in five focus areas including energy / water, natural environment, built environment, waste / recycling, greenhouse gas emissions as part of the Master Sustainability Plan. In the 2-year span of the Sustainability program, the Town has implemented 2 renewable energy projects, integrated a building automation system at its public safety building, and recognized National Pollinator Week in support of pollinators and monarch butterflies, specifically.

Richardson is a dynamic city of 119,00 people located just North of Dallas, TX. A leader in developing and incubating cutting-edge technology businesses, Richardson also holds true to the values that are part and parcel of our native Blackland soils, including conservation. Mayor Paul Voelker has been a signatory to the Mayor's Monarch Pledge for many years, and is committed to encouraging city projects and partnerships that foster conservancy of pollinators.
