Over the past several years, Pickering has developed and implemented a number of initiatives to support the Monarch butterfly and other important pollinators such as birds, bats and bees. Through participation in the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, Pickering will continue to help create Monarch habitat, raise community awareness about the importance of these species, and educate residents on roles they can play. Through collaboration we also endeavor to encourage other Canadian cities to do the same.

We have a City leadership and residents who are committed to protecting and sustaining the local butterfly population through education and creation of butterfly gardens.

Champaign, in east central Illinois, is a City with a population of approximately 90,000 people. Along with our neighboring City of Urbana, Champaign is the home of the University of Illinois. Mayor Deborah Feinen and the Champaign City Council have provided clear direction and leadership to City staff that our green infrastructure is a community priority. Mayor Feinen spearheaded this effort by issuing the City's first Monarch Conservation Month Proclamation in 2016.

Boerne, the county seat of Kendall County, is one of the fastest growing and desirable places to live in the nation with its historical charm, natural Hill Country beauty, vibrant parks, and award-winning community services. Located 30 miles northwest of San Antonio, seventh largest U.S. city, Boerne is positioned on the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau that is rich in both natural and cultural resources. Both the City of Boerne and Kendall County collaborate with multiple robust local conservation-focused venues, land trusts and volunteer organizations that do much to educate, promote and implement a variety of programs and activities that support native species diversity. The results of these partnerships is evident in the protection and enhancement of habitat for native plants and pollinator species of this biologically diverse ecoregion.

The City of Pharr is located in deep South Texas and is considered an area of great importance since it is utilized by the monarch butterflies during their migration. This portion of the monarch highway is threatened and conservation in our area is critical for all native plants and animals. This has led us to pledge and continue to commit to helping the native flora and fauna.

Sugar Land is a city in Central Texas with a population of roughly 111,000. The city has 9 miles of Brazos River Corridor and is home to more than 2,000 acres of parks and open space. Mayor Joe R. Zimmerman of Sugar Land, TX has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with their signing of the Mayor's Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitat throughout the city.

We have a documented roosting site in town that we are monitoring, are working with community groups to increase pollinator plants and habitat around town in support of this iconic species.
