Mayor Sylvester Turner has committed to protecting the monarch butterfly and other pollinators through actions taken by City of Houston staff to propagate and plant milkweed plants, establish and restore native habitat, and engage the community in monarch conservation.

Charleston is a city in east central Illinois with a population of roughly 17,000. The city is home to Eastern Illinois University, beautiful Lake Charleston, and is nearby the Warbler Ridge Conservation Area and Fox Ridge State Park. These amenities create a conservation corridor that spans over 4,000 acres. In partnership with the Urban Butterfly Initiative, the City has created 12 dedicated butterfly habitat “hotspots” in and around the City. With these efforts, in 2020 and 2021 the NWF announced Charleston a "Monarch Champion" community and Charleston has been named the “Butterfly Capital of Illinois”. Mayor Combs has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitat throughout the city.

The Village of Glenview, Illinois is a suburb about 20 miles north of Chicago with a population of approximately 49,000. The Village has created a monarch conservation plan and includes milkweed and nectar plants in landscaping at numerous public facilities. The Village has also partnered with local schools to support their pollinator gardens and provides educational materials to encourage residents to create private pollinator gardens.

North Mankato Minnesota is a community with a population of 14,000. We currently have prairies at Benson Park and Bluff Park along with 19 other community parks, which incorporate Pollinator Gardens. Mayor Dehen of North Mankato, Minnesota has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge. It is our goal to work with Local Master Gardeners and the 4H groups to help in the education to our citizens about pollinator gardens and their purpose.

Moorhead, MN lies along the Red River of the North within the Lake Agassiz basin. There have been efforts for years to improve the sustainability of the region. Dakota Audubon has been a partner with the city, converting turf grass into prairie along the Red River. The city is investigating ways to supplement the work of Dakota Audubon to continue building corridors and providing food sources for pollinators. We planted two pollinator beds on city property, and we have been looking at other areas of expansion.

The City of St. Louis is located on the eastern border of Missouri along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. This location is a natural byway for Monarch butterfly migration. In 2014, St. Louis began its Milkweeds for Monarchs initiative and has established well over 400 green spaces with milkweed and nectar sources to support the Monarch and other pollinators. Mayor Tishaura O. Jones continues the City’s important efforts to support pollinators and connect residents with nature. Monarch and pollinator gardens will continue to be established and maintained in city parks, neighborhoods, schools and at homes across St. Louis.
