Greenville’s reinvigorated downtown serves as the focal point, contributing significantly to the city’s rising reputation as one of the best places to live in the United States. The city features more than 400 acres of parkland, including Unity Park, Greenville’s newest park featuring state-of-the-art playgrounds, expansive green spaces, pedestrian bridges and walking trails and Falls Park on the Reedy River, featuring impressive natural waterfalls, gardens, nature trails and the Liberty Bridge, a striking pedestrian suspension bridge. Adding to the city’s distinctive charm is the Swamp Rabbit Trail, 22-miles of multi-use greenway that traverses along the Reedy River. The City of Greenville takes great pride in its parks and recreation system and the natural environment. Providing habitat for pollinators including Monarch butterflies is important to support the natural ecosystem, public and private gardens, and overall environment. Sterling Heights supports pollinators—including monarch butterflies—through dedicated habitat creation, education, and city-wide native planting. At James C. Nelson Park, the City established a Community Garden with more than 100 beds, native planting areas, a microforest, a bee apiary, and a Butterfly Conservatory that includes monarchs among its native species, alongside the Clinton River Pollinator Pathway Children’s Garden. The City’s voter-approved Pathway to Play and Preservation program (Nov. 5, 2024) advances preservation of green space and reforestation of the community tree canopy, including land acquisition tools such as a land bank and conservation easements to protect open space. Sterling Heights’ urban forestry program (DPW) has earned 26 consecutive Tree City USA awards and supports ongoing street-tree planting and replacement. Regional green infrastructure work in Sterling Heights (Sterling Relief Drain retrofit) has added extensive native pollinator plantings and created a multi-mile butterfly flyway intended to attract monarchs, while also improving stormwater quality.

The Town of Clinton is a small historic river community in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where residents place a strong value on environmental stewardship, open space preservation, and quality of life. Located along the South Branch of the Raritan River, the town is supported by an active Environmental Commission, Green Team, and community partners that work to protect natural resources and promote sustainability. Clinton is renewing its participation in the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge to continue expanding habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators. The town has established native pollinator gardens, supported community planting initiatives, and incorporated pollinator-friendly practices into municipal landscapes. Clinton also recognizes the importance of addressing light pollution as part of ecosystem health. Efforts to promote responsible outdoor lighting help protect nocturnal pollinators, migratory wildlife, and the night environment while maintaining public safety. Through this pledge, Clinton reaffirms its commitment to biodiversity, education, and long-term environmental resilience.

The Village of Tarrytown, a vibrant community located along the banks of the Hudson River in Westchester County , NY has been a strong advocate for pollinator conservation since 2020. The Village has collaborated with volunteers groups to create native gardens in prominent public spaces and parks throughout the Village. This corridor provides valuable habitat for threatened pollinators , showcases sustainable landscaping and brings the beauty of native plants directly to residents . Milkweed is a component of all our public gardens as we seek to help our threatened monarchs. Additionally the Village is undertaking a tree planting program to increase the tree canopy with the addition of native species. Invasive vine removal is an ongoing activity for Village departments and volunteer groups as is a campaign to educate residents about the threat of invasive vines.

A nationally recognized downtown and eclectic mix of both urban and rural living lend toward a feeling of home whether you've lived here all your life or are just visiting. But a part of that feeling is only possible because of the balance of city life and natural beauty that Cedar Falls has. Mayor Danny Laudick has committed to ensuring we protect our natural spaces, and part of that commitment includes protecting the native environment and wellbeing of our monarch butterfly and other pollinator species.

It is home to a remnant fen that is an Illinois State Nature Preserve and supports many locally threatened species. Active volunteers host restoration days for locals.
