Proclamation by Mayor of Salem, Virginia in support of the Monarch Pledge 2023

The City of Salem proclaimed March 24, 2022 as Mayor's Monarch Pledge Day 2022.

City Horticulturist, Jeff Caesar has signed up the Salem Municipal Golf Course as a participant in a program called ‘Monarchs in the Rough’. This is a cooperation program between the USGA, the Audubon Society, & the Environ. Defense Fund to establish or re-establish milkweed species at participating courses. As you may know, milkweed is what monarchs utilize almost exclusively for their food source and reproduction--the decline of the monarch species can be attributed to the reduction of milkweed species around the country. Simply by signing up, they have donated milkweed seeds (enough to cover approximately one acre) and a nice placard showing our participation. I’ve installed the placard on hole #2 in the naturalized prairie area and in the coming weeks will sow the donated milkweed seeds. We hope to see plants this summer and hopefully more monarchs!
