Monarch waystations are an effective way to conserve monarch habitats. Waystations are habitats that provide milkweed to sustain monarch butterflies through breeding season and their migration in the fall. They can be made on any available plot of land by planting a variety of milkweeds that will ensure nectar for monarchs throughout the year. You can also plant milkweed in an established garden. There is no restriction to the area of a Waystation, but at least 100 square feet are suggested. Even so, any work done to give more resources to monarchs will have a positive influence on their conservation.
Here in Yellow Springs, we are a National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitat Community with almost 100 certified and registered residents’ yards and monarch waystations. Our Women’s Park, located on the Little Miami bike trail next to the entrance of Glen Helen, is a beautiful example of a community supported waystation, as the photos show.
