Merced California is a beautiful agricultural city and is known as the Gateway to Yosemite with a population of roughly 96,073. It is surrounded by beautiful lush lands with almond orchards that bloom beautifully in the Spring and home to many species of insects including the monarch butterfly. Mayor Matthew Serratto has committed to saving the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habits throughout the city. Which will it not only beautify the city that much more but will help keep the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators thriving which is important to the pollinators and our plants and the Earth as well.

Communications and Convening ▸

Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens ▸

Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.

Systems Change ▸

Integrate monarch butterfly conservation into the city’s Park Master Plan, Sustainability Plan, Climate Resiliency Plan or other city plans.
