City of Pismo Beach

Pismo Beach, CA

Ed Waage

Mayor

Pledge Summary

Pismo Beach is a popular destination for visitors who come for the wide sandy beaches, beautiful downtown and great amenities for visitors. Each fall, the Monarch Butterflies migrate thousands of miles to California’s Central Coast, and Pismo Beach has long been one of their favorite wintering destinations. The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is one of only a few sites in the state that have historically hosted tens of thousands of butterflies, clustering in the limbs of tall Eucalyptus trees beside the coastal estuary. There is ample milkweed for the butterflies at the grove. A local non-profit, the Friends of Price House, has planted milkweed in a city park.

Action Items Committed for 2026

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.
  • Launch or maintain an outdoor education program(s) (e.g., at schools, after-school programs, community centers and groups) that builds awareness and creates habitat by engaging students, educators, and the community in planting native milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants (i.e., National Wildlife Federation’s Schoolyard Habitats program and Monarch Mission curriculum).
  • Initiate or support community science (or citizen science) efforts that help monitor monarch migration and health.
