Pledge Summary

Columbia is the capital city of South Carolina with a population of more than 135,000 residents. The city sits at the confluence of the Saluda and Broad Rivers, forming the Congaree River, and is home to beautiful green spaces including Finlay Park and the Three Rivers Greenway, as well as vibrant neighborhoods and community initiatives. Mayor Daniel Rickenmann of Columbia, South Carolina has committed to protecting the monarch butterfly and other pollinators through the signing of the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in expanding pollinator habitats and sustainable practices throughout the city.

Communications and Convening

  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.
  • Earn or maintain recognition for being a wildlife-friendly city by participating in other wildlife and habitat conservation efforts (i.e., National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Habitat program).
