Pledge Summary

Located just 14 miles from downtown Atlanta, Chamblee is a vibrant urban city with a diverse community and international flair. The City of Chamblee began as a small rail town and was incorporated in 1908. Through multiple annexations, the City has grown to more than 7 square miles and 29,000 residents. Mayor Clarkson of Chamblee, Georgia is committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitat throughout the city.

Old City Hall Pollinator Garden Success!

A garden plot formerly occupied by invasive species was converted to a healthy, vibrant pollinator garden. The garden is now home to over 30 species of native plants, and monarch butterfly caterpillars who munched on milkweed in 2025.

Milkweed Giveaway Success

Chamblee Public Works gave away over 250 swamp milkweed plants this year during September.

Action Items Committed for 2021

Communications and Convening

  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.
  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Host or support a native seed or plant sale, giveaway or swap.
  • Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.
  • Add or maintain native milkweed and nectar-producing plants in gardens in the community.
