Town of Fuquay-Varina

Fuquay-Varina, NC

J. Blake Massengill

Mayor

Pledge Summary

The Town of Fuquay-Varina has a responsibility to raise awareness to help protect the viability of the monarch butterfly and other pollinators, as pollinators contribute to the vibrant ecosystem, successful local agriculture and gardening, and natural beauty that enhance Fuquay-Varina’s high quality of life. Mayor J. Blake Massengill is proud to join Mayors across North America that have made the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, in an effort to create and restore healthy habitat for this majestic species through awareness, education, and identifying opportunities to provide habitat on Town property.

Community Spotlight

Action Items Committed for 2022

Communications and Convening

  • Launch or maintain a public communication effort to encourage residents to plant monarch gardens at their homes or in their neighborhoods. (If you have community members who speak a language other than English, we encourage you to also communicate in that language; Champion Pledges must communicate in that language.)
  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.
