Pledge Summary

The City of Spokane in Washington State has a population of roughly 220,000 and is located in the heart of the beautiful Inland Northwest. We strive to develop plans and strategies that are environmentally responsible and Mayor Woodward looks forward to signing the Mayors' Monarch Pledge to engage residents and staff in protecting the monarch butterfly and other pollinators throughout our city.

Duncan Gardens in beautiful Manito Park

The Parks and Recreation Department maintains Manito Park's 78 acres of native and cultivated landscape and 20 acres of world class botanical gardens.

Communications and Convening ▸

Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.
Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.
