Pledge Summary

Ormond Beach is a city on the central east coast of Florida with a population of around 43,000. In addition to a beautiful beach the City has over 50 parks and two community gardens. The Environmental Discovery Center is a nature education facility within a 153 acre park near the center of the City. Mayor Bill Partington has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with his signing of the Mayor's Monarch Pledge. Mayor Partington looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitats throughout the City.

Communications and Convening

  • Engage with community garden groups and urge them to plant native milkweeds and nectar-producing plants.
  • Engage with gardening leaders and partners (e.g., Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, Nature Centers, Native Plant Society Chapters , other long-standing and influential community leaders) to support monarch butterfly conservation.
  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.
  • Add or maintain native milkweed and nectar-producing plants in gardens in the community.
  • Display educational signage at monarch gardens and pollinator habitat.
