Pledge Summary

Algonquin is a town in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with a population of roughly 30,000. The city is nestled in the Fox River valley and is home to over 470 acres of restored natural area. President Sosine of Algonquin, IL has committed to saving the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayors' Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging the community in establishing more pollinator habitat throughout the Village.

The Woods Creek Reach 6/7 Restoration Project Stabilized 1,200 L.F. of eroded stream channel and 2,200 L.F. of tributary channel and ecologically restored 26 acres of riparian habitat.

Trails of Woods Creek Natural Area

The Village of Algonquin worked directly with a large developer to convert an old golf course into a single-family home community that includes a 33 acre naturalized green infrastructure corridor that ties in to the Woods Creek Riparian Corridor.

Dixie Creek Reach 5

Constructed in conjunction with a sanitary sewer upgrade, this stream was depositing silt and woody debris into a downstream stormwater basin, causing flooding. The restoration repaired erosion & removed the dead woody material, alleviating flooding.

Action Items Committed for 2026

Communications and Convening

  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.
  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.
  • Engage with developers, planners, landscape architects, and other community leaders and organizers engaged in planning processes to identify opportunities to create monarch habitat.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.
  • Launch, expand, or continue an invasive species removal program that will support the re-establishment of native habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
