Pledge Summary

The City of Topeka is the capital of Kansas. Topeka is in the NE corner of the state of Kansas, with a population of 127,000, and offers excellent benefits for wildlife with an abundance of timbered areas, waterways, and tall grass prairies. Topeka is aware of the challenges Monarch butterflies face in the wild and is responding to help provide for the needs of monarchs through monarch friendly landscaping and planting following water pollution control projects, through public awareness and education classes year round by the Topeka Zoo, with active participation in catching, tagging, and releasing monarchs as part of Operation Monarch Watch, and through a large annual native wildflower sale for the community.

Community Spotlight

Action Items Committed for 2022

Communications and Convening

  • Launch or maintain a public communication effort to encourage residents to plant monarch gardens at their homes or in their neighborhoods. (If you have community members who speak a language other than English, we encourage you to also communicate in that language; Champion Pledges must communicate in that language.)

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Host or support a native seed or plant sale, giveaway or swap.
  • Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.
  • Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.
  • Initiate or support community science (or citizen science) efforts that help monitor monarch migration and health.
  • Display educational signage at monarch gardens and pollinator habitat.
