Pledge Summary

Lafayette is a city in central Indiana with a population of roughly 75,000. The city is located along the Wabash River, adjacent to Purdue University, and is home to Columbian Park and the Columbian Park Zoo, which is the second oldest zoo in Indiana. The Zoo is home to an enclosed, walk-through butterfly exhibit as well as an exterior butterfly garden that is committed to saving monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Mayor Roswarski and the Zoo have committed to saving monarch butterflies by signing the pledge again for 2026.

Communications and Convening

  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.
  • Engage with gardening leaders and partners (e.g., Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, Nature Centers, Native Plant Society Chapters , other long-standing and influential community leaders) to support monarch butterfly conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Add or maintain native milkweed and nectar-producing plants in gardens in the community.
