Pledge Summary

Lafayette is a city in central Indiana with a population of roughly 75,000. The city was settled next to the Wabash River and is situated next to Purdue University. The city is home to Columbian Park and the Columbian Park Zoo, along with many other beautiful city parks. Mayor Roswarski of Lafayette has committed to saving monarch butterflies and other pollinators with his signing of the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building and maintaining pollinator habitats throughout the city.

Communications and Convening

  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.

Systems Change

  • Reduce or eliminate the use of herbicides, pesticides, or other chemicals that are harmful to monarchs and pollinators and urban wildlife.
