Southwest Ranches, FL

Steve Breitkreuz

Pledge Summary

The Town of Southwest Ranches was incorporated in 2000 with the motto, "Preserving Our Rural Lifestyle." At the direction of the Town Council, the Southwest Ranches Parks Department functions as the lead in our community's efforts at conservation. The Town completed the requirements to be a designated Community Wildlife Habitat in 2018, and we are committed to continuing to provide habitat for monarchs as they make their annual journeys.

Action Items Committed for 2021

Communications and Convening

  • Launch or maintain a public communication effort to encourage residents to plant monarch gardens at their homes or in their neighborhoods. (If you have community members who speak a language other than English, we encourage you to also communicate in that language; Champion Pledges must communicate in that language.)
  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Earn or maintain recognition for being a wildlife-friendly city by participating in other wildlife and habitat conservation efforts (i.e., National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Habitat program).
  • Display educational signage at monarch gardens and pollinator habitat.

Systems Change

  • Launch, expand, or continue one or more ordinances to reduce light pollution to benefit urban wildlife.
