Pledge Summary

The City of Gillette, Wyoming is a fairly large community within the state and is the home of approximately 30,000 residents. The city is located in northeast Wyoming, near Devil's Tower and is nicknamed, "the Energy Capitol of the United States" because of the many coal mines, and the bustling local energy industry. Gillette is a young community with a growing pathways system, an ingrained love for the outdoors and has a deep rooted respect for wildlife. Mayor Louise Carter-King and the City of Gillette have committed to saving the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators that help to beautify the prairie all around our community. The City looks forward to engaging our residents in building more pollinator friendly habitat throughout our community.

Communications and Convening

  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.

Systems Change

  • Launch, expand, or continue an effort to change municipal planting ordinances and practices to include more native milkweed and native nectar producing plants at city properties.
  • Integrate monarch butterfly conservation into the city’s Park Master Plan, Sustainability Plan, Climate Resiliency Plan or other city plans.
