Perennial plants overtake annuals in Normal
To help increase pollinator habitat, landscape beds at Town of Normal parks and municipal properties are planted primarily with a multitude of nectar-producing perennials.
Fransen Nature Area Explodes
Wildflowers are abundant in the Fransen Nature Area, providing high levels of nectar for our local pollinators. The park is a favorite for photography enthusiasts.

The rose garden on the campus of the former Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's School has been transformed into a picturesque perennial garden.

Fun-fact signs located in Underwood Park provide public information emphasizing the need to preserve and restore native Illinois prairie that ultimately improves habitat for the monarch butterfly.
Native habitat in Maxwell Park
Maxwell Park continues to provide natural habitat for the monarch butterfly. Milkweed, goldenrod, and other nectar producing wildflowers are actively growing in the native tallgrass areas throughout the park.
Allers Shelter Natural Area attracts pollinators
Native plant material, that attracts songbirds, hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, blend into the flowing and ponded areas of a newly installed water feature with natural stone outcropping.
Action Items Committed for 2021
- Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.
- Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.
- Add or maintain native milkweed and nectar-producing plants in gardens in the community.
- Launch, expand, or continue an invasive species removal program that will support the re-establishment of native habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
- Launch, expand, or continue an effort to change municipal planting ordinances and practices to include more native milkweed and native nectar producing plants at city properties.
