Town of Ossining

Ossining, NY

Dana Levenberg

Town Supervisor

Pledge Summary

The Town of Ossining is located in the Lower Hudson Valley with a population of approximately 38,000 including residents in the unincorporated area of the town and two villages. The Town has a history of making eco-friendly programs available to residents and routinely seeks guidance and advice from Master Gardeners and experts at a local nature preserve. Recently it passed legislation to allow beekeeping, which specifically requires beekeepers to provide a food source for their bees so they do not compromise the existing food sources for native pollinators. Town Supervisor Dana Levenberg is committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators, through the efforts listed in this application and other methods. She looks forward to continued engagement with residents regarding the protection and creation of habitats for pollinators.

Community Spotlight

Action Items Committed for 2021

Communications and Convening

  • Launch or maintain a public communication effort to encourage residents to plant monarch gardens at their homes or in their neighborhoods. (If you have community members who speak a language other than English, we encourage you to also communicate in that language; Champion Pledges must communicate in that language.)
  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Launch, expand, or continue an invasive species removal program that will support the re-establishment of native habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators.

Systems Change

  • Launch, expand, or continue an effort to change municipal planting ordinances and practices to include more native milkweed and native nectar producing plants at city properties.
  • Integrate monarch butterfly conservation into the city’s Park Master Plan, Sustainability Plan, Climate Resiliency Plan or other city plans.
