Pledge Summary

Mountain Park is a small City of less than 800, a Wildlife Refuge and part of Tree City USA. We encourage our citizens to participate in growing milkweeds and protecting Monarch Butterflies. All year long and especially during yearly Earth Day celebrations, we make milkweed plants and milkweed seeds available. We encourage our citizens to NOT Grow the Common milkweed (asclepias syriaca) nor the Tropical or Scarlet Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). Both are not native to Georgia and have the potential to escape from gardens and take over the habitats where our native milkweeds now grow! We have been planting and growing from seed NATIVE milkweed here in our Mountain Park Community Garden, right at City Hall and now also on the Mountain Park Green and along right of ways in the city proper starting in 2016.

Communications and Convening ▸

Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.
Engage with community garden groups and urge them to plant native milkweeds and nectar-producing plants.
Launch or maintain a public communication effort to encourage residents to plant monarch gardens at their homes or in their neighborhoods. (If you have community members who speak a language other than English, we encourage you to also communicate in that language; Champion Pledges must communicate in that language.)

Program and Demonstration Gardens ▸

Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.
Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.
Host or support a native seed or plant sale, giveaway or swap.

Systems Change ▸

Increase the percentage of native plants, shrubs and trees that must be used in city landscaping ordinances and encourage use of milkweed, where appropriate.
