Pledge Summary

The Village of Deerfield is a municipality in northern Illinois with a population just under 19,000. The Village is focused on restoring pollinator habitats on public land through out the community. There are countless benefits to maintaining and restoring pollinator gardens and staff will continue working to find new locations.

Interactive Native Planting Locations Map

Deerfield created an interactive map using GIS to show the native planting locations throughout the Village. Currently, four acres of turf have been converted to native gardens with an additional five acres planned for 2023.

Action Items Committed for 2021

Communications and Convening

  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.
  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants along roadsides, medians, or public rights-of-way.
