Pledge Summary

The Village of Hoffman Estates is located in Cook County, Illinois and is a northwest suburb of the City of Chicago. Hoffman Estates is a diverse community of nearly 55,000 located along and on both sides (north and south) of Interstate 90. The Village contains over 4000 acres of forest preserves under the auspices of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Additional parks and outdoor facilities are enjoyed by our residents and visitors through partnership with the Hoffman Estates Park District. Mayor Bill McLeod and our Village Board of Trustees are incredibly supportive of sustainability efforts throughout the Village, including the preservation of the Monarch Butterfly. The Mayor supports activities put forth by the Village’s Sustainability Commission related to the preservation of the Monarch.

Action Items Committed for 2022

Communications and Convening

  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.
  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.

Systems Change

  • Remove milkweed from the list of noxious plants in city weed / landscaping ordinances (if applicable).
