Pledge Summary

Champaign Illinois is a city of approximately 90,000 people in east central Illinois. Along with the neighboring city of Urbana, Champaign is the home of the University of Illinois campus. Mayor Deb Feinen signed a Proclamation in May of 2016 declaring the month of May as Monarch Conservation Month in Champaign, also signed on to the Mayor's Monarch Pledge. The goal of the proclamation was to raise awareness of the declining monarch butterfly population, which is the State Insect of Illinois. Staff was directed at that time to play a leadership role by creating habitat and educating the community about pollinators.
