Pledge Summary

Located in the heart of Southwest Volusia with a population of 14,000, Orange City offers a wide variety of opportunities for people to live, work, visit and play. Orange City is one of the region’s major centers of retail and commerce and boasts a healthy business community with everything from retail to industrial, all while fostering a strong entrepreneurial spirit for new businesses. With the backing of the full City Council and the Mayor, they stand committed along with dedicated staff who are passionate about saving the monarch butterfly and our pollinators. In signing the Mayors Monarch Pledge, we look forward to increasing our efforts throughout the city in engaging the community on the need for more pollinator habitats.

Communications and Convening

  • Issue a proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat. This proclamation must incorporate a focus on monarch conservation.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Host or support a native seed or plant sale, giveaway or swap.

Systems Change

  • Launch, expand, or continue an effort to change municipal planting ordinances and practices to include more native milkweed and native nectar producing plants at city properties.
